a 255-inch Ford Indy engine and a basically stock fastback.

They were shooting for a run at 200 mph during the private Bonneville timing session scheduled by Arfons and two streamliner teams.

After successfully setting both D/Production Sedan FIA records at 136.645 (standing kilometer) and 150.134 (standing five-mile), they tipped the can for back-to-back nitromethanated blasts of 171 and 175 before a burned piston ended the outing.

From start to finish, the ambitious project spanned just 34 days in late October and early November.

Mario Andretti with the M6B, the “429’er, actually 494 ci, 8.1 liters

January 3rd, 2017 by admin

They claimed 720 horsepower from this monster and Andretti said he could get wheelspin in any gear any time; he said the acceleration was so great he had trouble reaching the gearshift.

Unfortunately, during pre-race warm-up a constant-velocity joint failed, breaking an upright which was fixed but the unseen CV joint breakage prevented the car from starting from the pit lane at race time

the 2016 Indy 500, one for the record book

June 19th, 2016 by admin

It sold out. Seriously, the Indy 500 has never sold out before, but since it sold out completely, they allowed the local black out on tv broadcasting to be lifted for the first time since 1950

The Andretti team took 1st and 2nd. However… the famous racing family hasn’t won an Indy 500 since Mario Andretti’s 1969 win. Between Mario, Michael, Jeff and Marco, the Andrettis have only one one Indy 500 in 59 tries.

By the way, trivia time, the 1st, 50th and 100th winner of the Indy 500 have all been rookies.

This was the first Penske free podium of the season

Mario Andretti, a quick bio

June 17th, 2016 by admin

He was born in Italy and didn’t emigrate to the States — from a post-World War II refugee camp — until he was fifteen. A scrawny kid with no money, patron, or mechanical skills, he clawed his way up from small-town bullrings with dogged persistence, irrational bravery, and incomprehensible talent. How good was he? He was series champion in his second Indy-car season, qualified on the pole in his first F1 grand prix, and was still winning races when he was fifty-three.

“Winning: The Racing Life of Paul Newman” film to be released

April 8th, 2015 by admin

The film, co-directed and produced by Nate Adams, will open in select theaters nationwide and on-demand on May 22.

Newman’s racing career spanned 35 years. He won four national championships as a driver and eight championships as an owner.

Carolla started restoring and racing vintage racecars in 2003 and has since acquired, restored and raced seven cars that Newman raced.

“There were so many incredible stories about Newman over his 35-year racing career and I was amazed that no one wanted to commit to telling his story,” he said.

The film includes interviews with Newman, Tom Cruise, Robert Redford, Patrick Dempsey, Robert Wagner, Joanne Woodward, Jay Leno, Mario Andretti and Michael Andretti.

Mario Andretti

November 23rd, 2011 by admin

One of only 3 drivers to win in 4 different decades.. the other two were Foyt and Petty.

One of only two drivers to win in Formula One, Indy Car, the World Sportscar Championship, and Nascar

Was once pulled over for speeding in Santa Monica, and the cop asked “Who do you think you are? Mario Andretti?” No kidding, it really happened. He was interviewed by Hot Rod in the Jan 2012 issue, page 16
