John Hawkinson died without selling his car collection, and here is the last look at the great little collection he had before it was auctioned off

John “Hawkeye” Hawkinson lived a simple life in a farm house with no running water, no electricity and little insulation.

The story of Hawkeye’s cars is the story of an eccentric collector of “all things beautiful” who shunned his family’s fortune for a simple, solitary life in the Adirondacks. Hawkeye was a master mechanic and an accomplished artist, photographer and writer. He was also a colorful character, perhaps best known locally for driving through Saranac Lake in midwinter with the top down in one of his Packards, wearing a raccoon-skin coat and smoking a corncob pipe.

His grandfather Amos Whitney co-founded the machine tool company Pratt and Whitney

Inside his barns were rows of beautiful 1920s cars, ackards, Buicks, Cadillacs and Pierce Arrows , as well as three fire trucks — one each from Saranac Lake, Lake Placid and Tupper Lake

some of the collection were a Packard roadster, a 1919 Mack truck, a 1930 Cadillac V12, two carriages, a sleigh, a 35-foot ladder truck and most are from the 1920s. Nothing newer than ’31. The oldest one was a 1919 Linn tractor

“Chasing Classic Cars” will focus on Hawkeye’s 1930 Minerva, with a Hibbard and Darrin body,

Setorii Pond, was raised by her grandparents, Robert Pond (Navy pilot turned business man) and Jo (Italian benefactor of beautiful genetics) and grew up with the cars. “ My Grandparents and I collected the cars together as a family; each car has a fun, heartfelt and unique story all its own. Some of my favorite cars are the Ferrari 250 TR, Austin Martin AR1, Tucker, and Jaguar XJ13.”

Some of the more interesting (at face value, not kowing the stories behind them) cars in the collection, a 1938 Bugatti T57C, a 1931 Auburn boattail speedster, a Muntz Jet, a Fiat Jolly, a Delorean, a 1961 Ferrari 250 Testarossa, a couple Ferrari Daytonas, a 1967 GT40, the 1926 Rickenbacker Super Sport boat tail, a 1943 Studebaker Weasel (WW2 military transport) , a Tucker and a Vector W8

I think, but didn’t verify, that this license plate collection has one California plate from each year

There is a story about the above outdoor phone booth… it was knocked off it’s foundation after a birth of a baby celebration got a bit inebriated behind the wheel…. anyway, the next day the phone company man was smooth talked and he told them about the below indoor wooden phone booth that was taking up space in the phone company basement… and they got it to add to the collection!

I didn’t get the info on what kind of bike the above is

Above appears to be a 1938 Ford
