99 year old Gladys Stroud enjoys wheeling around Las Vegas in her 2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, and says the secret to long life is cigars, sex, and scotch. No argument here!

March 27th, 2017 by admin

She came into the world on March 31, 1917, six days before the U.S. entered World War I and at a time when the maximum speed limit in most American cities was 10 mph.

While it’s fascinating to learn that the hamburger bun was invented in the year of her birth, it’s even more wonderful to be in the company of someone who has been around for a century and still has the good health to really enjoy life now.

Returning to New York after high school, she graduated from business school and met her first husband, Arnold Bazell. Their second child, Frank, a Green Beret, was killed in Vietnam in 1965. He was awarded the Silver Star for Valor.

Her only prescribed medications are for mild cases of high blood pressure and acid reflux. She also takes a few vitamins.

After parking the Olds the other day in her Peccole Ranch neighborhood in west Las Vegas, Gladys half-ran into her house to play mahjong.

Lila Mogelon, rode across Canada on a motorcycle, as her wartime job of monitoring Japanese and German sub’s comms was finished and she needed a vacation!

December 29th, 2016 by admin

Lila Brownberg Mogelon held the distinction of being one of only 18 “girl wireless operators” in Canada. She served in Ottawa and Victoria where she monitored the communications of German Submarines in the Gulf of St Lawrence and then the Japanese subs off the coast of Vancouver Island. In 1945 she traveled across Canada by motorcycle.

FX announced today that it will shoot a pilot for Mayans MC in March, that will be written by Kurt Sutter who created the immensely popular SOA and who will direct the pilot episode.

December 2nd, 2016 by admin

Here’s the official synopsis, per FX:

Mayans MC is set in a post Jax Teller world, where EZ Reyes, a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the Cali/Mexi border, struggles with his desire for vengeance against the cartel, and his need for respect from the women he loves.

fellow San Diego cyclist Denise Mueller recently set a new woman’s bicycle land speed record of 147 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.

September 21st, 2016 by admin

The pace car towed Mueller to about 90 mph, but the acceleration up to 147 mph was all from her legs. The bike’s drive train uses two massive 60-tooth chainrings in a double-reduction configuration to provide a massive amount of torque, while keeping the chainrings far enough off the ground for clearance (something that would be difficult with one even larger chain ring).

Mueller rode a highly customized bike built by Chris Garcia of SD Wheel Works with technical support from Da Vinci Designs and KHS Bicycles. The team effort was named Hoehn Adventures Project Speed powered by Cyclance

Hat ‘n’ Boots gas station, built in 1955 to draw in customers to a strip mall. The gas attendants all wore cowboy outfits

July 18th, 2016 by admin

Seattle artist Lewis Nasmyth was hired to “rustle up” a design for a western-style gas station in Georgetown Oregon. Featuring a 44-ft. wide cowboy hat and 22-ft. high boots, the Hat n’ Boots opened the next year to a stampede of customers.

The office was under the hat, which read’s “Premium Tex”

In fact, for a time it was the biggest selling station in the state. But in the early 60’s, a brand new interstate, I-5, started diverting traffic away from the station, and by the 80s it was out of business

the boots are his and hers bathrooms, this is a novel concept for a roadside attraction bathroom!

The tallest one was the men’s restroom. It had bold and dark coloring. The shorter boot housed the women’s restroom. It was painted in soft pastels. There was also a six foot tall concrete cactus that served as an air pump which is gone now.
