Oom the Magnificent probably read the Oz books, and decided he could pull off the Magnificent, Great and Powerful Oz role, but he had previously went by the name his mom gave him, Pierre Bernard, 1875–1955, American yogi, scholar, occultist, philosopher, mystic and con artist

Oom’s popularity, especially with upper middle class women, continued through the 1920s and 1930s.
